Project “CFI to EFI” — 1984 Mustang 5.0 LX Coupe

Recently purchased by Mikes Mustangs as a shop project car is a 1984 Mustang 5.0 LX Coupe (Notchback). This car was purchased from a second owner and will be converted from a CFI (Central Fuel Injection Primitive Ford Fuel Injection) to a late-model style multi-port fuel injection. Stay tuned as this project gets underway.

Episode I — Removal of the Sith

We started by removing the rusty single exhaust system that was the original stock system. One catalytic converter and one muffler with a dual tip exiting on the driver’s side of the car. We will trash the single hump crossmember and replace it with a later model double hump unit. Next we removed the original 7.5 rear axle housing and installed our tried-and-true 3.73 5-lug 28 spline from our original ’88 LX Mike’s Mustangs Race Car. This rear is now going into its fifth Mustang (actually fourth, not counting a 1983 Capri).

We have always preferred a 5-lug wheel configuration as it lends itself to more rim selections and is also a personal preference over the standard 4-lug setups. We have already removed the remainder of the existing drive train – engine and transmission as well as the CFI’s cheesy fuel system which consisted of an internal and externally mounted fuel pump. We also removed the prehistoric EEC computer and harness. The wiring harness and vacuum bundle was discarded and will be replaced with a late model mass air harness.
